Getting to JT
Getting to Joshua Tree National Park
We will be staying in Sheep Pass Campground, Group site #6. This is in the upper part of
the Park.
Find your way to Interstate 10 heading east.
Exit Highway 62 signed to Yucca Valley. Proceed through Yucca Valley to the small
town of Joshua Tree.
Joshua Tree is the last point for supplies including water.
Turn right (south) on Park Blvd (also called Quail Springs Road). It is 30 minutes to our
camp from this intersection. In seven miles you will come to the west entrance station to
the Park.
The school can apply to the Park for a fee-waiver; otherwise you will be charged an
entrance fee per vehicle.
Proceed past the entrance station another twelve miles through the upper part of the Park.
Landmarks you will pass include, in this order, the marked turn for Hidden Valley Picnic
Area, Cap Rock/Keys View, and Ryan Mountain Trailhead. The turn for Sheep Pass
Campground is about a mile past the Ryan Mountain Trailhead parking lot on the right
(south) side of the road. It is easy to miss but they’ve thought of this and put a turn out
just past the turn. We are in the first campsite in the loop which is site #6. It’s on the left
as you drive in.
Note that there is no water in the campground. We will have plenty but will have to make
a trip to town at some point to replenish our supply.
Cell phones work sporadically in the Park but Cingular does work in the campground
(most other service providers do not work here though).
Todd Vogel’s phone does work in the campground and the number is 760-920-0774. This
can be used as an emergency point of contact but just during evening and morning hours
as we will be out the balance of the day during the program.
